How VAT is calculated

Adding VAT to a net price
VAT = net x rate / 100, and gross = net + VAT. A net 100 at 21% gives 21 VAT and 121 gross.
Removing VAT from a gross price
Net = gross / (1 + rate / 100), and VAT = gross - net. A gross 121 at 21% gives 100 net and 21 VAT.
Choosing the rate
Use the rate that applies in the country of supply. Most EU countries sit between 17% and 27% standard, with reduced rates for some goods and services.

VAT calculator FAQ

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate as a decimal and add it back. For 21%: net 100 x 0.21 = 21 VAT, so the gross is 121. The calculator does this for you when you pick Add VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross by 1 plus the rate. For 21%: 121 / 1.21 = 100 net, leaving 21 VAT. Pick Remove VAT to reverse a tax-inclusive figure.

Which VAT rate should I use?

Use the rate in force where the supply is taxed, which is usually the customer country for many cross-border B2C sales. Standard EU rates range from 17% to 27%; reduced rates apply to some categories.

Is this VAT calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser, so the figures you type never leave your device.
