Why it exists

FreeBillGen exists because issuing a clean, country-correct invoice should not require a monthly SaaS subscription priced higher than the invoice itself, and should not require a desktop accounting suite designed for someone else's bookkeeper. The longer origin story - including who built it and why - lives at the bottom of the home page; this page covers what the tool actually is.

FreeBillGen is a hosted invoice generator at freebillgen.com that handles jurisdiction-aware tax and invoice formats for 30+ countries in 80 languages, with open registration for any freelancer or small business worldwide. It never asks for a card. Open on every continent - Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, Oceania - and every country and island in between.

What it does

FreeBillGen generates tax-compliant PDF invoices for freelancers and small businesses worldwide. It supports multiple currencies, multiple numbering series, client and company management, recurring billing schedules, and jurisdiction-aware tax logic - VAT in Europe and Africa, GST in Asia and Australia, sales tax in the Americas, consumption tax everywhere else - for 30+ countries today, with country-specific extras (quarterly tax reports, reverse-charge wording, small-business notes, intra-EU Art. 138 item-type disclosure) built in where required.

Other things in the box today: open self-service registration with email verification, optional second-factor login (TOTP authenticator apps and WebAuthn passkeys), an invoice-amount spell-out that produces correct words-in-words text in all 80 supported languages, a dashboard with overdue and outstanding summaries, an invoice editor with autosave, and a command palette (Cmd+K) for keyboard-only navigation.

Why it is free

Every feature is included for everyone, with no card required, no trial timer, no upsell tier, and no plan to introduce one. There is exactly one reason this works: the operator covers the infrastructure costs personally.

  • No investors and no shareholders pressuring for monetisation.
  • No advertising, no third-party trackers, no behavioural analytics.
  • No data sold, brokered, or shared with anyone outside the operator.
  • No support team to staff - the product is built to need very little support.

The tool stays free because it stays small: one operator, one focused product. If running it ever stops being feasible at zero cost, the honest plan is to say so transparently rather than to bolt on a paid tier.

If you want to chip in towards running costs, donations are appreciated but never expected. Nothing changes for you either way - every feature stays available regardless.

04.

Who it is for

Freelancers and small businesses anywhere in the world - every country, every continent. Registration is open: anyone can sign up with an email address, verify it, and start issuing invoices the same minute. FreeBillGen ships with country-correct invoice formats and tax rules in 80 languages, so whether you invoice from Berlin, Reykjavík, Nuuk, Tokyo, São Paulo, Sydney, Toronto, Cape Town, Lagos, Mumbai, Buenos Aires - or any island, archipelago, or territory in between - the right legal fields, tax treatment, and language defaults are already configured.

It is designed for a single operator per account (one set of credentials, one organisation) rather than a multi-tenant platform with seats. It is not accounting software; it is invoicing software.

What it does not do yet

Honest list of what is not in the box today - and is on the roadmap:

  • QuickBooks, Xero, and other accounting-platform sync.
  • Bank API integration and automatic payment reconciliation.
  • A native mobile app - the web app is responsive, but not yet built mobile-first.
  • Built-in payment collection (Stripe and friends) - payment links only for now.
  • Multi-user / team-seat access - one operator per account today.

All of these are coming. The order they ship in is shaped by what users actually ask for - if one is blocking you, the contact address below is read by the operator personally, and feature requests genuinely move things up the queue.

Built with

FreeBillGen runs on a deliberately small, well-maintained stack with strict security defaults. PDFs are rendered in-house with mPDF, fonts are served from a privacy-friendly CDN (bunny.net), transactional email is dispatched through SMTP2GO under a Data Processing Addendum, and bot abuse on the auth pages is filtered by Cloudflare Turnstile. The application database is MariaDB hosted on DirectAdmin within the EU, under GDPR.

What is deliberately not in the stack: no Google services, no Meta pixels, no analytics SDK, no error-reporting service. The full vendor list - and the precise data each touches - is in the privacy policy.

Contact

FreeBillGen has no support ticketing system and no chatbot. Email reaches the operator directly. Bug reports, VAT-rule corrections, and feature requests are all welcome - if you find a VAT calculation that looks wrong for your country, that is especially worth reporting; the goal is to be correct, not just plausible.
