What Wave actually is
Wave is a financial platform for small businesses, freelancers and sole traders. It combines bookkeeping and reports with invoicing. Its current official pricing lists a $0 Starter plan, a paid Pro plan, transaction-priced Wave Payments and paid Wave Payroll. Plan inclusions and payment eligibility have their own conditions.
Wave currently accepts new business accounts in the United States and Canada. That is where its supported payment, payroll and banking features are offered. If you operate there and want bookkeeping, invoicing and eligible integrated payments in one product, Wave may be the better fit. FreeBillGen does not replace those accounting functions.
What FreeBillGen is, and is not
FreeBillGen is a hosted invoice generator, not an accounting platform. The free core includes unlimited invoices, no watermark, no card to start, and 80 options for invoice labels. Lifetime Pro - €49 once, tax included, with no monthly or annual renewal - adds multiple companies, the write API and outbound webhooks, Xero/QuickBooks export formats, and auto-send on recurring schedules. Optional metered third-party services are not included; when offered, they use separate one-time credits that do not renew.
FreeBillGen has no integrated payment processing, bookkeeping ledger, bank-feed reconciliation or payroll. Its Pay now field opens an issuer-supplied hosted URL, and the chosen provider handles the transaction and fees. A named EU company operates the service, its Privacy Policy discloses external providers and roles, and it has no advertising or behavioural analytics. VAT is configurable and supported reverse-charge notes are available; users must confirm the treatment for each transaction.
FreeBillGen vs. Wave at a glance
The two tools overlap on one feature, invoicing, but they are built for different jobs. The table below summarizes what each one focuses on. Neither is “better” in the abstract; the right choice depends on whether you want a full accounting product or a focused invoice maker with a named EU operator, disclosed providers, and no advertising or behavioural analytics.
- Primary focus
- FreeBillGen: a focused invoice and quote generator. Wave: a full small-business accounting platform with invoicing included.
- Best region fit
- FreeBillGen: EU and international, with configurable VAT, supported reverse-charge notes and 80 options for invoice labels. Wave: new business accounts are available in the United States and Canada.
- Payments
- FreeBillGen: bank details and a SEPA scan-to-pay QR, plus an optional hosted Pay now URL supplied by you; FreeBillGen does not process or settle the payment. Wave: integrated card and bank payments with per-transaction fees.
- Accounting and payroll
- FreeBillGen: no ledger or payroll; Lifetime Pro includes Xero/QuickBooks export formats. Wave: full double-entry accounting, plus paid payroll.
- Privacy
- FreeBillGen: a named EU operator, disclosed providers, and no advertising or behavioural analytics. Wave: a US-headquartered platform with its own privacy notice and provider arrangements.
- Cost
- FreeBillGen: free core; Lifetime Pro is €49 once, tax included, with no monthly or annual renewal. Wave: $0 Starter plan, with paid plans, payment fees and payroll.
Who should choose which
Choose FreeBillGen if invoicing is the main job you need done and you want configurable VAT, supported reverse-charge notes and language choices without an accounting suite or mandatory processor.
Choose Wave if you are a US or Canadian business that needs bookkeeping alongside invoicing, such as bank reconciliation, expense categorization and financial reports, or wants Wave's integrated payment and payroll services. A dedicated invoice generator does not replace those accounting functions.
Trying FreeBillGen alongside Wave
You do not have to commit to a migration to test the fit. Because FreeBillGen needs no credit card or payment-processor setup, create a sample invoice, confirm the tax treatment and compare its PDF with your current workflow.
Before changing systems, export or retain the records you must keep and check Wave’s current data-access and export terms. You can continue using an accounting product while creating invoice documents elsewhere if that workflow suits you. FreeBillGen invoices download as PDFs, and Lifetime Pro adds accounting-file exports and a write API. Those features are not an automatic migration or two-way accounting sync.
Wave alternative questions
Is FreeBillGen a free alternative to Wave?
Yes, for invoicing specifically. FreeBillGen is a free invoice generator with unlimited invoices, no watermark, no card required and invoice labels in 80 languages. It is a good alternative to Wave if you mainly want to create and send invoices. It is not a replacement for Wave’s full accounting, bank reconciliation or payroll features.
What is the main difference between FreeBillGen and Wave?
FreeBillGen is a focused invoice generator with configurable VAT fields, supported reverse-charge notes and invoice labels through 80 selectable language options. A named EU company operates it, its Privacy Policy identifies external providers and roles, and it uses no advertising or behavioural analytics. Its optional Pay now field opens a hosted payment URL supplied by you; FreeBillGen does not process or settle the payment. Wave is a broader accounting platform, built mainly for the United States and Canada, that includes invoicing alongside bookkeeping, integrated card payments and paid payroll.
Does FreeBillGen handle EU VAT and reverse charge?
FreeBillGen provides configurable VAT fields and supported reverse-charge wording. It does not determine that a rate or reverse-charge treatment is legally correct for a transaction. Confirm the supplier, customer, place-of-supply and registration rules before issue.
Does FreeBillGen process payments like Wave does?
No. FreeBillGen can show bank details, a SEPA scan-to-pay QR code and an optional “Pay now” link to a hosted payment URL you supply. It does not create, process, verify or settle that payment; the provider you choose handles the transaction under its own terms and fees. Wave offers integrated card and bank payments, which is useful if you want payment processing inside the same product.
When is Wave the better choice over FreeBillGen?
Wave is the better choice when you need full accounting in the same product as invoicing, especially in the United States or Canada. If you want bank-feed reconciliation, expense tracking, financial reports, integrated card payments and payroll, Wave does more than a focused invoice generator like FreeBillGen.
Can I use FreeBillGen without creating accounts across an ecosystem?
Yes. FreeBillGen is a focused service operated by a named EU company. Its Privacy Policy identifies external providers and the operator's controller or processor role for different data. It does not use advertising or behavioural analytics, and it is not an account for a wider accounting suite.
